Many people buy a putty sprayer only to find that it doesn’t perform as well as the manufacturer advertised, leading them to feel they’ve been misled. I have to admit that the quality of putty sprayers can vary considerably—some are excellent, while others fall short. Many people buy a putty sprayer only to find that it doesn’t live up to the manufacturer’s claims, leading them to feel they’ve been misled. I have to admit that the quality of putty sprayers can vary considerably—some are excellent, while others fall short. However, as long as you choose equipment from reputable manufacturers, the results can be quite satisfactory. Sometimes, unsatisfactory outcomes aren’t due to the machine itself but rather to shortcomings in the following areas. It wasn’t done well.
For many users, this is their first time operating a putty sprayer. As a high-pressure machine, it typically requires several steps—such as oiling, venting, back‑flushing, pressurizing, loading material, and spraying. If these seemingly simple procedures are not handled carefully, they can lead to problems. For example, one customer reported that the machine was underpowered and unable to spray. After testing by the manufacturer, it was determined that too much engine oil had been added. Therefore, when operating the equipment, it is essential to strictly follow the instructions or requirements provided by qualified personnel.
Some putty sprayers can only apply a very thin coat, so the putty’s viscosity must be carefully controlled. Additionally, high-pressure airless sprayers should not be used to apply paints containing impurities such as fibers or sand, as these can clog the spray gun. Even when applying putty, it must be thoroughly mixed—there should be no unmixed lumps. On one occasion, a customer reported that the machine had blocked the nozzle. At first glance, the putty appeared evenly mixed; however, upon inspection, it was found that when the machine was shut down and the operator scooped from the bottom of the feed bucket, the putty contained numerous clumps.
Once all the preceding steps have been completed correctly, the next step is spraying. Many people have seen others spray and assume it’s straightforward—just pick up a spray gun and start spraying. In reality, spraying requires skill: the speed of the gun, the distance between the gun and the wall, the number of coats, and other factors all influence the final result. Generally, maintain a steady, consistent pace—neither too fast nor too slow—and keep the gun about 1.5 to 2 meters from the surface. For the first coat, allow for a slight tackiness; the second coat can be applied more thinly. This approach yields a superior finish.
